Curzon is a slave who has run away from her masters. Isabel is a free woman. Curzon, who has separated from Isabel, joins the military where he makes friends with soldiers and a boy called Eben. This helps him get through difficult times. Curzon is constantly worried about Isabel. Bellingham recognizes him at a camping site. Bellingham recaptures him and makes him a slave once again. Isabel is also captured by Bellingham. Curzon is the main character and he goes through a lot of hardships. Curzon’s close friendship with Isabel & Eben was instrumental to his success.
Curzon values Eben’s support and friendship. Curzon was able to save Eben’s live by throwing rocks at a British Soldier. Despite their many disagreements, they remain friends. Eben has hidden a spoon Curzon had stolen to spare him punishment. Eben knows Curzon’s character and trusts him. Eben again comes up with an idea in the middle to help Curzon free himself. Eben explains: “Benny, will wear your clothes. He’ll pull your hat lower. When we leave sight, he’ll change into his normal clothes. Eben’s friend will need to find a hiding place. This shows that he is helping his friend to escape and begin a new life. Curzon was not able to accept Curzon’s plan because Isabel would be punished by his master after Isabel’s escape. Curzon replies: “Even if your plan was perfect, I could not go.” Bellingham’s maid is a personal friend. I haven’t convinced her yet to leave. I can’t run away, because she will be mistreated if I do.
Isabel and Curzon had a deep, complex friendship. She is initially unkind and insensitive when she brought them back together. At the end (when Bellingham recaptured both of them), she let Curzon and Isabel know she likes and cares about him. Curzon is the same from beginning to end. Curzon wants Isabel to stay with him, but he must convince her to let him find her sister. They have many obstacles to overcome and must move on from their past of being in chains. Together, they can overcome all obstacles and gain strength. They are motivated to try and escape by the love that they have for eachother.
The historical thriller ends with a journey of Curzon. He has been in chains, spent a winter as soldier and become a slave again, all thanks to his friends Isabelle & Eben. Curzon’s bond with Isabel is strengthened at the end. The two have now begun a new chapter in their journey. They’re on a search for Ruth.
