The Roman Army: Its Significance
In summary
Bibliography
Introduction
The Roman Army is regarded as one of best and most developed ancient armies. Their techniques are still used by armies today. Even when not fighting, the roman army trained year-round. It is because of this that they won so many battles. The Roman army began in 31 BC, and ended in 337 AD. Julius Caesar was one of the more interesting Roman generals. He later became Rome’s dictator.
Roman Army: Its ImportanceThe Roman army’s highly trained soldiers were the main factor that aided in Rome’s growth. Rome would not have survived without the Roman army. The army was highly disciplined and had harsh punishments but they were effective. The Roman army was the first to insist that their soldiers undergo mandatory combat training. The roman army did not train a half-million soldiers all at once, but instead used a useful system. Different sections of the Roman army trained together in groups called centuries. A century is made up of about 80 men. Next, we have a cohort. One cohort is about six centuries. A Legion is the next level. Each legion is composed of approximately 5,500 men. Multiple legions were also present. Moreover, this formation proved to be useful during battle. Rome’s Punic Wars with Carthage is a great example. Rome was able to defeat them due to their advanced weaponry and amazing formation. The Romans had catapults with which they could fire oil-filled pots at their enemy. It was to ensure that the enemy would not be hurt if a burning tree fell on them. It is only one of the many incredible resources they had. The Romans also had the reputation of being violent, because they didn’t want to leave any room for the enemy. Julius Caesar once said “I came, saw, conquered”, (47) which indicates that the Roman Army had been successful in conquering.
They developed a variety of strategies and skills to stay fit, healthy and proficient on the battlefield. We still use some of them. This includes a number of their combat formations. It worked because the Romans, at that time, were the only army to have such a formation. Our armies are still trained by the Romans, rather than a group of untrained troops. Many things have changed, even though some things remain the same. Back then, women were not permitted to serve in military service. Today, they are. Italy was the last country to officially allow women to fight. Weaponry and armor have changed dramatically as guns are now the main weapon of choice for fighting. Armors are better and more difficult to detect.
This is secondary source document on Ancient Rome. The documentary shows the life of ancient Romans and how their army worked. The CBBC is a government-funded broadcasting channel which has collected data by algologists.
This Primary Resource is a collage of gladiators fighting in the Colosseum. Support them! Watching gladiators fight until the end was just like watching a football match for us. (A fun day out!) The Colosseum was a place where popular Roman soldiers went to increase their popularity or to make a lot of money. Adrian Goldsworthy published a book in 2003 entitled The Complete Roman Army.
This secondary source is a book that was published about Roman armies. It describes what happened in the past. It could be about the Punic Wars.
I find this to be a dependable source as the author is extremely knowledgeable and has done a lot of research. False facts are not allowed in books.
ConclusionSo you can see that the Roman Army was one of most elite and well-trained armies from ancient times. The Romans were important because they extended Rome into all of Italy. Many things have changed, but others have not. The best ancient army ever, it began in 31 BC and ended in 337 AD. Julius Caesar was one of the more interesting Roman generals. He later became Rome’s dictator.
