Many works today that are called dystopian have been referred to as such. While they attempt to address the issues and problems of society, most of them simply exploit the dystopian environment. Here is my attempt to explain why dystopia is so important and how our world is headed towards self-destruction. Because George Orwell (1903-1950) best describes and explains Dystopia, the following research will be followed.
First, let us define utopia before we dive into this topic.
Imagine you’re going to another country, and you arrive camping. It suddenly rains as you climb up a mountain. The entrance to a cave is clogged with rocks from landslides. You decide to hide inside. You can’t help but go in the opposite direction. As you descend, you begin to faint. You will feel like you’re on an entire island once you get up. An island is a mountain. You will be welcomed by the island’s inhabitants. Surprisingly, people are extremely friendly and welcoming. They will tell you about their society and where you are located. Everybody is nearly identical, and each person has a purpose in their society. They don’t know about another world. This is the island that was lost Atlantis. This is Thomas More (1478-1535), perfect fictional society “Utopia”. It was published by Thomas More in 1516. It is also known as “The Golden book, as practical as funny about best structure of state and new island Utopia”, and it is a well-loved book. It depicts ideal systems of society and state functioning. He describes a utopia where war, taxes and murder are not allowed, and everyone works together for common good. In this article, the author also criticizes the British customs and orders. Although it has been more than five centuries since utopia was published, its relevance is still evident. Here’s an example of Plato (427 BC)’s book “Republic”. Plato (427 BC), suggests that the best government should be led by a “philosopher-king”. This book shares the greatest similarity with all of them. It is about ideal government and society. Both Plato as well as Thomas More present their visions on what the ideal society should look like. Both books deal with the same subject. Both men used their books to critique their current societies.
But utopia is not possible in this world. Its biggest disadvantage is its impossibility. It is not possible to build it because there isn’t a working model. The second utopia cannot be built due to the loss of motivation and economic goals. This will lead to the demise of humanity as a whole or its return in its primitive form. This all is the reason there is so much public pressure on individuals. This utopia is the dystopia. The dystopian universe hides a complex social system. It is often the main character who opposes this system.
Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), Gulliver’s Adventures, was the first person who mentioned dystopia. There are many flaws in the characters who meet with fictional societies. Sociologists and scientists have a tendency to be extravagant and naive while neglecting the basic needs of people. Swift illustrated his dystopia by showing how he gave fictional creatures the same properties as the groups we have in our world. Also, he indicated that they were poor.
Aldous Huxley (1894-1963), “Brave New World” novel explains that people are not raised but born to play a particular role in society. Drugs and propaganda support happiness overall and human qualities more than they do disappear.
Yevgeny Zamyatin, a Russian author (1884-1937), published “We” in 1924. The novel depicts harmony and conformity in a state of totalitarianism, where freedoms and individuality were eliminated.
“1984”, a great novel by George Orwell (1903-1950), which contains elements of satire and is one the most important books of the 20th-century in the genre. These works are in addition to the ones I have already mentioned (Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), Gulliver’s Travels (1894-1963), Aldous Huxley (1894-1963), “Brave New World”, Yevgeny Zmyatin (1884-1937) and “We”. George Orwell (1903-1950) was a vocal opponent of communism and fascism. His work was marked by clear prose and awareness of social injustice.
Four years later, the Second World War ended in 1949. George Orwell (1903-1950), published his book “1984”. Orwell tried to carry on the six-year-old Second World War and the German Nazi government. Orwell described totalitarianism’s horrors. Orwell attempted to bring to light the horrors that totalitarianism can cause. We now look at ‘1984 with fear, trying to comprehend why the world and its states have entered the hell Orwell referred to.
It was April. The clocks had just struck 13 hours. This is how the originality and cruelty of that regime were portrayed. The action is in London’s Oceania. Oceania is home to a brutal totalitarian regime and a social hierarchy. Living there, residents are denied civil rights and freedom. Big Brother, the mysterious dictator of Oceania, is always watching. Residents are denied sexual relationships and love in this city. It is a crime to love. They had to pledge their love to their children by joining a special organization that compelled them to love Big Brother and the Party, or training future soldiers to be police officers-thought. The Ministry was devoid of abundance, and the Ministry was engaged to tortures; the Ministry was engaged to lie. Winston Smith was the protagonist in this Ministry of truth. Residents in this area are able to watch each other instead of watching TV or using monitors.
You can take social media as an example. They are able to see our every move and try to anticipate them.
The same can be observed in our current time. Every day brings us news. Consider, for example the Russian seizure of Crimea and its annexation by Ukraine. Russia claimed that Crimea was originally Russian property. They also reported the news daily for two minutes ten days a week to persuade the people. Russia is granted a portion of Ukraine’s land after a referendum, which could easily be faked. Because this was a coup, Ukraine doesn’t have anything to do. It is believed by many. It is not so different that Crimea was Russian property. I can also say with the same logic “give us Siberia, since Siberia has been there, and Kyrgyz lives”. A fascinating fact is that Crimea, which is Russia’s strategic location, has access to the Black sea. Smith said, “The most horrible in two-mminute hate was that you couldn’t participate without.” Internet users can feel the emotions of commercial, religious, or political organizations.
The popularity of dystopia books is another reason Orwell’s novel can be compared with our times. “Hunger games”, a dystopia movie, is an example. It tells of the structure and social nature of the world after all the global natural catastrophes. This example shows that dystopia has been around since the time Orwell. This film genre is very popular and promotes destruction and power. It is possible that screen movies could one day be printed books.
We discovered why “1984” was relevant to today’s times and why dystopia is becoming more popular among young people. These ideas are all related to Orwell’s book “1984”. There are two sides to every story. The future will allow us to think about the positive qualities of dystopia as well as how it can benefit humanity.
