Summary
It is important to know yourself before making any final decisions about your career. You should first gather information about what being a nursing professional means. Do some research to understand what is involved. You should ask yourself, once you truly understand what a Nurse is about, if it’s something that suits you. Do you have the skills to become a nurse and can you show compassion for others, despite any personal myths, beliefs or ideas you may hold? After you have finished your research and have answered the above questions, consider the future impact of nursing on your life, including educational, leadership and management. ?”
Choice of NursingBefore deciding on a career, it is important to understand why you chose that career. When choosing a career, a variety of factors are taken into consideration. These include: financial gain and stability, flexibility, security in the workplace, as well personal and professional motivations. The most important thing to consider when choosing a nursing career is compassion. It is important to be compassionate and to heal people regardless of their age, race or ethnicity. Many nurses want to help people and care for those who are sick.
Nursing focuses on more than the specific illness. The nursing profession focuses on the health of an individual, their emotional well-being, education level, and mental health. It is important to have a holistic approach when providing care. It is because I understand that I can provide this kind of care to the people I see every day.
Essence of NursingMasters 2016 “As individuals and society change, nursing philosophy changes to reflect new understandings.” Page 101. As the ANA’s numerous changes between 1980-1995, 2003, 2010, 2015, and others show, this is true. Your own morals, values, beliefs and truths will determine what you believe is the essence of nursing. Understanding your own perspectives is essential to developing a caring, professional and personal philosophy about the foundation and essence of nursing.
My own personal experience has been as a CNA, then a licensed vocational nurse for 5 years before becoming a registered nurse. My own views on what nursing is all about have changed dramatically as a result of my experience in the healthcare industry. The core of nursing, in my opinion is to care for the person as a whole. As a CNA I learned that people needed more than simple nursing. They also had to be considered as an individual.
Beliefs & ValuesYou must establish a relationship with the patient. These include empathy, trust and respect. As a result, I think your patient should trust that you’ll treat them with compassion and respect. In order to heal properly, it is necessary to be able identify mental, social, and emotional needs, along with the physical needs. My belief is that the family members of patients should also be involved in the holistic approach to care. This gives the family an opportunity to participate in the healing of their loved one, which is something that the patient will value. The patient will know that your main concern is their well-being and you will do everything possible to ensure they are able to heal. This is again related to the nurse-client relation.
Multidiscipline is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think of my colleagues in healthcare. When developing a treatment plan for a patient, a “team-based” approach is the best way to achieve the best results. This can include a collaboration approach where individuals with different knowledge levels are involved to treat the entire patient. I am well aware that the health of my body and mind is essential to my ability care for others. I cannot care for anyone else if I’m not healthy. My own well-being is dependent on a number of factors, including: exercising, eating healthy, getting enough rest (especially if I’m working), taking breaks during the day, managing my time, taking time to relax, avoiding burnout, and not being sick at work. I realize that my physical, mental and emotional health are all important factors in meeting my patient’s needs.
Vision of the FutureWhen first entering the healthcare sector at a very young age, it was not clear to me what the future held in terms education and advancement. After a short time, it became clear to me that I was interested in being a part the positive change and growth in healthcare. Currently, I’m enrolled in RN-MSNFNP. In less than a year, The University of Texas Arlington will award me my Bachelors of Science of nursing. Then I will begin my graduate studies and aim to complete my Family Nurse Practitioner degree in 2022.
In the next five years, I hope to become a certified Psych nurse practitioner and begin working as one. My overall goal is to achieve this during my journey of education. I want to return to my community and work in a MHMR or addiction clinic, psychiatric ER, etc.
I am ready to ride the long road ahead. A saying that I have heard over and over again is “Anything worthy of having is worth battling for”. -Thomas Jefferson. In 10 years I want to start my own mental health group home, or small clinic. I will be able to provide care in a smaller setting.
SummaryI possess a variety of strengths, and these will enable me accomplish my professional journey and educational goals in the coming 10 years. The main strength I have is my passion and desire to help others. I will do it for that reason alone.
Strengths are not without limitations. To overcome one’s own limitations, I think it is important to be able recognize them. The baccalaureate process after an associate or diploma degree can be intellectually and emotional stressful. The nurse’s previous beliefs, values and image are all thrown into disarray. This is a necessary part of growth, even though it can be a source of anxiety. : (Sullivan, 1981). This could be my biggest challenge. I have been delaying returning to school because of my fear of starting all over again, and using updated technology. But I know that I am the only one who can tackle it head-on. Let’s say that I have made the first step to overcome this limitation which has prevented me from beginning my education journey.
